Elk & Friends

About this event

A December tradition in the Keast household is a trip to Jewell Elk Preserve to see the elk (they are reliably in attendance this time of year), and then a few more miles down the same road to check out Fishhawk Falls and the associated creek at James Wooden County Park (the waterfall is attractive, the walk is easy and enjoyable, and sometimes there are salmon in the creek).   It’s a good drive, rain or shine, and there are interesting things to see when you get there.  And as long as we’re that far from home, I’d propose going further and doing lunch at Mo’s in Astoria.  All in all we’ll have covered about 80 miles before Mo’s clams see us coming through the door.

Key points:
  1. Let’s meet at the Scapoose, Oregon Fred Meyer. They have food, coffee, gasoline and everything a reasonable person – or one of us, for that matter – would need for such a venture.
  2. We’ll drive about 50 miles to the Elk Preserve (and our first decent shot at a bathroom, but it’s a very good one),  After getting our fill of elk watching, we’ll drive another 3 or 4 miles down the same road to Wooden County Park. I’m betting all that will take us about 90 minutes.  Then another 25 miles or so to Mo’s.
Tips based on prior years’ experience.
  1. I plan to dress in layers – about 35 of them.  And I plan to have a pair of gloves in the car.
  2. I’m bringing binoculars – they're handy for the elk, but not so much for the salmon if we encounter any.  I'll have a pair for me and a loaner, but if you have a pair it’d be a good thing to have in the car.
  3. This isn’t a trip that will reward a clean car – save the detailing for June, or at least until Sunday.
