"Dash for Kids" benefitting Doerenbecher Hospital

Event Planner(s): Jess Heitman of MHMC and Woodstock Motorsports

Approximate times: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at PIR

Jess Heitman of Woodstock Motorsports (and fellow club member) has asked the club to help with setting up, cooking, serving, and clean up at the Dash For Kids benefit luncheon he does every year for Doerenbecher Hospital. Jess asked us last year to come out help and we had a good crew of members helping. It is for a good cause and helps give back to our community. Please consider coming out even if it is for just a few hours. And it was lots of fun!

Please RSVP to: jessheitmanauto@gmail.com.  If you don't wish to help or can't volunteer, please consider a donation to Jess to help pay for the food he donates or to Doerenbecher Hospital. When you RSVP, please state the hours you wish to volunteer.

The complete story and details are below:
For several years Woodstock Motorsports has provided lunch on one race day for Doerenbecher children, friends, family and Cascade crew and volunteers during the "DASH For Kids" race weekend as the annual Cascade Sports Car Club fundraiser.  Lunch is free for the Doerenbecher children and families and Cascade crew/volunteers.......we do set up a "donation" bucket for cash donations that is given to the Doerenbecher benefit fund that weekend.  We are requesting some help from MHMC volunteers to arrive in the morning on 8/23/15 at 9:00 AM to help set up for the lunch, prepare/cook the BBQ chili dogs/side dishes/beverages, serve the lunch at 11:30 AM and help clean up afterwards around 2:00 PM.  Some friends donate cash to cover the cost of the lunch that Woodstock Motorsports prepares for about 300 people.  All friends and volunteers will be listed and recognized on a poster at the entrance to the lunch tents.  It's a lot of fun and the children and families really appreciate a special day away from their medical issues.

Dash for Kids History:
In 1984, Cascade took Doernbecher Children’s Hospital as their charity. Over the years, there have been different activities to raise money. We give rides at noon in both racecars and exotic cars, such as the Dodge Vipers. This has become a popular fund-raiser for us. In 1998, a silent auction was started after one of our race workers, Danny Frasier, passed away at Doernbecher. Every year, the auction has grown by leaps and bounds with Danny’s spirit always felt. The auction is the biggest source of income for our fund-raiser. Each year we receive hundreds of items from local and national businesses. In 2002, the auction was renamed to the Danny Frasier Silent Auction.

The Dash for Kids is usually held in August or September. This is a regular amateur racing event for the Cascade Sports Car Club. You can see over 200 cars of all varieties. Whether they are a sedan or an open wheel formula car, it’s all great racing. There is practice and qualifying on Saturday and qualifying and racing on Sunday. The public is invited to come out and see amateur racing at its best.

About our charities:
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, located in Portland, Oregon, and has been Cascade Sports Car Club’s principal charity organization for 29 years. CSCC proudly supports the highly praised children’s healthcare facility because of their excellence in care, advocacy, innovation, education and research. Ask a friend, neighbor or colleague, and someone may know of a child or a family whose lives have been changed by the care of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Take Action INC, located in Portland, Oregon, serves low-income children throughout the Portland Metro area. While these children get food during the week while at school, many go hungry over the weekend. This program fills backpacks with food to take home each Friday for these children and their younger siblings; ensuring weekend nourishment. The backpacks are returned the following Monday, to be filled again the following Friday.

Dash for Kids:
The Kid’s Karavan is an exciting event for the kids that are patients at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Whether they are an in-patient or out-patient, on Saturday and Sunday of our event, the kids and their families are invited to join us. Lunch is provided, then the kids are taken out in racecars for a mock race of three laps. The kids are greeted by flag waving at all the corner stations. They receive checkered flags, plaques, and goody bags. We have been lucky in the past with good weather, although it’s hard to predict what Mother Nature will do.
