Meet at the Dooman Home in Hillsboro at 10:30 am, leave at 11:00.
SNAP benefits are set to lapse this weekend which means we are going to have a lot of hungry people. No better time to help your fellow man than by donating to your local food banks. And the next sunny day is scheduled for this Sunday. No better time to get out and see the fall leaves changing. It might be your last chance.
Join us on a last-minute fall run through the Yamhill Valley and wine country. We’ll meet at the Dooman Home in Hillsboro at around 10:30 am and leave at about 11:00. We will drop off donated foods there before driving south through the Yamhill Valley through farmlands, wet-lands and wine country, ending in Carlton, the Wine Country Capital of Oregon. Carlton is open for business and the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon sampling some of the best wines and food in the Willamette Valley.
Now is a great time to go through your pantry and find some of those packaged foods to donate to the hungry people losing their SNAP benefits. As an example, here is a list of the top 10 items food banks like to receive. They do not accept unpackaged products.
1. Canned vegetables and beans
2. Whole wheat or vegetable pasta
3. Pasta sauce in unbreakable jar/can
4. Peanut butter
5. Boxed whole grain crackers
6. Whole grain, lower sugar cereal
7. Boxed granola and cereal bars
8. Unsweetened applesauce cups
9. Canned tuna and chicken breast
10. Canned chicken, vegetable, and bean soup
We will drop off our donated foods at the Dooman home before we leave on the run and Jim & Linda will deliver them to a local food bank when they open after the weekend.
